How this works (methodology & sources)
- Saved locations: Stored in your browser's local storage (this device only). Includes 5 built-in defaults plus any custom addresses you add.
- Geocoding: OpenStreetMap Nominatim for final address validation, Photon for search-as-you-type suggestions.
- NOAA stations: CO-OPS Metadata API, filtered to nearest 12 within 150 mi.
- Tide predictions: NOAA CO-OPS Data Getter —
predictions, MLLW, hilo, lst_ldt. - Sun, twilight, moon: Astral (NOAA solar position algorithm + Jean Meeus moon calc), localized via
timezonefinder. - Weather: Open-Meteo — dawn-window (4–8 am local) cloud %, precip %, wind. Available ~16 days out.
- Driving ETA: OSRM (real road routing, no live traffic).
- Alignment tiers: Prime ≤30 min (score 80–100) · Excellent 30–60 (60–80) · Workable 60–90 (40–60).
- Score formula:
max(0, 100 − |Δmin| × 1.11). - Window search: Two match types — (1) tide extreme falls inside ±N min of sunrise/solar-noon/sunset, (2) tide stays below threshold (default 0.5 ft MLLW) for a contiguous span inside the window. Spans computed from NOAA 6-minute interval predictions.
- Golden-hour bonus: Low tide within 30 min of sunrise or sunset earns a 🏆 badge — best lighting + flats access combo.
